Order of Operations for Men’s Shopping

There usually comes a point where a guy decides he wants to look better and upgrade his wardrobe. He wants to feel more confident, more put together, and just better in his clothes overall.

So he does what seems obvious.

He goes shopping.

But the problem is, he usually has no real plan.

He walks into a few stores he’s been to before, maybe checks out a few brands he’s seen online, and starts trying things on. But he’s not really clear on what he’s looking for, what actually suits him, or what’s even missing from his wardrobe in the first place.

So he keeps shopping anyway.

And usually the whole thing ends with him feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and going home with a few items he doesn’t even really love just because he felt like he needed to buy something.

This is the story a lot of my clients tell me. And honestly, it makes perfect sense.
If you don’t like what’s in your closet, the natural assumption is that buying new clothes should solve the problem, right?

So why doesn’t it?

The issue lies in the order of operations. Shopping is the last step, never the first.

The way you need to think about this from here on out is that shopping is the least important part of the entire process. Shopping is simply a means to an end of acquiring the stuff you need to look good.

Years ago, I was shopping in person with a client and he said to me, “Dude, this is like a targeted missile strike.”

That always stuck with me, because that’s exactly how this needs to be approached.

A missile strike doesn’t happen by accident. No general just launches missiles and hopes they land somewhere close to the right target. First there’s planning. There's strategy. You figure out what needs to be hit first and why.

Style should work the same way.

When I’m working with a client, strategy comes first.

We’re looking at what colors look best on you, what’s already in your closet that’s working, what your budget is, what your personal style is, what you’re trying to project, and what’s actually going to fit your body. At that point, we haven’t even started shopping yet.

After that, the next step is identifying the exact types of pieces you need and the specific brands that make sense for you. Again, we’re building the list before we ever step into a store or start browsing online.

Think about it like grocery shopping.

You don’t just head to the store, wander the aisles, and hope the right stuff somehow ends up in your cart. You go in with a list. And usually that list is based on what you want to make or how you want to eat that week.

Your wardrobe should work the same way.

Once you’ve got the strategy handled, shopping becomes a whole lot easier. Now you know what to look for, where you’re likely to find it, and why you’re buying it.

Strategy first. Shopping second.

If you confuse the order, you’ll waste time, money, and a lot of mental energy.

If you don’t know where to start, that’s what we do here.

My team and I work with men who want to take the complexity out of all this and have a clear path to looking incredible and building a wardrobe full of clothes they actually love.

We handle both the strategy and the shopping. We figure out what looks best on you, and then we source the right pieces to make it happen.

You can learn more about the service here, or apply for a quick 20-minute call with me and I’ll see if I can help. The call is complimentary, and if I’m not the right fit, I’ll point you toward someone or something that may be.

Hope this helps.
